Ho avuto lo stesso problema. Ho risolto in google api console >> schermata di consenso e aggiungendo un nome prodotto.

Works for me, l'unico problema è che puoi utilizzare il certificato di debug (per chiave API e ID client) solo se sei proprietario di un'app. Gli sviluppatori invitati possono utilizzare solo certificati di rilascio. – Darkmike

Per me il problema era che non avevo creato le credenziali per l'applicazione.

È andato a Google Developers Console> Credenziali> Crea nuovo ID client

riempito il nome del pacchetto corrispondente e SHA1 per la mia app, reran l'applicazione e poi ha funzionato!
